A Trumpdate (Sorry)

This is hilarious and awkward and very amusing to me: The amazing story of Donald Trump’s old spokesman, John Barron — who was actually Donald Trump himself. In the 1980s, when reporters called the Trump Organization to request an interview with the boss, they were sometimes referred to a spokesman, instead. That a busy and image-conscious executive such as Donald Trump would place a buffer between himself and the media was hardly unusual, but there was a twist: The spokesman, John Barron, was actually Trump, hiding behind a fake name. Also, this by Nora Ephron on Trump from back in 1989 is interesting and informative, considering: Here is what interests me about Donald Trump: He wants to be famous. He wants people to talk about him. He wants people to notice him. He wants people to write about him. He wants people to ask him for autographs and recognize him and invade his privacy; not that he seems to have any privacy; he doesn’t even seem to have a single solitary thought he manages to …

Party Systems & the GOP in 2015

I’ve been thinking about American political parties some today after hearing about a report from the Washington Post that saying the RNC/GOP may be making plans for how to nominate someone other than Trump if he’s in the lead going into the convention. And? Okay. I understand that, because: Trump. But, on the other hand, if he’s who Republicans across the States vote to nominate, he should be the nominee, because if not? What’s the point? (But don’t even get me started on what so many Americans apparently support because YIKES.) For once I guess I don’t have to feel too awkward about agreeing with Ben Carson about something: “I am prepared to lose fair and square, as I am sure is Donald,” Carson said. “But I will not sit by and watch a theft. I intend on being the nominee. If I am not, the winner will have my support. If the winner isn’t our nominee, then we have a massive problem.” Read more on Politico. Trump, African President

I was (and remain, at least a little) skeptical of Trevor Noah taking over as host for The Daily Show. But he’s doing well so far & this piece was a little bit of brilliance that we likely wouldn’t have gotten without this exact host making this particular personal connection: Donald Trump: America’s African President.

Donald “Go Back to Univision” Trump

Trump missed the memo on how national elections are going to be won now. It’s not going to be without the Hispanic vote (or without women, for that matter — so he’s got another problem: A recent CBS News poll of registered voters shows that 62% of women have an unfavorable view of Trump.) So this seems pretty stupid: Donald Trump attacked the most important journalist on Spanish-speaking television in a face-off on Tuesday in Iowa, telling anchor Jorge Ramos to “go back to Univision.” When called out on his plan to deport a whole lot of people (including those born in the U.S. to foreign parents, meaning U.S. CITIZENS BY BIRTH): Trump defended his plan to Ramos, saying “We’re going to do it in a very humane fashion,” said Trump. “I have a bigger heart than you do.” He said he doesn’t even know who Ramos is, but somehow he knows his heart is bigger? His comments about how great of a person he is remind me of when that person you know who …
