We snapped a few pictures sometime between 2 and 5am yesterday (today?). I’m not normally great at staying up so late anymore, but it’s been easy here. The party suites are full of Automatticians I otherwise don’t see around much, since there are so many of us and we work on many different things, so they’re a great place to spend the evenings. Late night #a8cgm last night. 😎 A post shared by Sarah Blackstock (@sarahblackstock) on Oct 18, 2015 at 11:37am PDT Last night at the #a8cgm selfie wall. Saturday at the GM was free of classes & projects, and set aside for activities and/or free time. So today I went shopping at a nearby outlet mall, then tried acupuncture for the first time. Later in the afternoon I participated in an “escape the room” challenge installed in a hotel room here at the resort. After dinner I spent hours in the party suite getting to know a bunch of coworkers I hadn’t managed to meet yet (even after 5+ days here) and spent time with the ones that have become great friends over this week. It’s been a great experience. I’m exhausted, yet exhilarated, and so thankful to be here and to work at Automattic. This place is great & these people are fantastic.
Today was the first full day free of class at the GM, so it was all activities & socializing. I wandered around Park City, met even more coworkers, and enjoyed the lovely weather here. Tomorrow I’m trying out acupuncture for the first time ever, joining a small group in an Escape the Room challenge, attending a Diversity Workshop, and meeting even more people (because meeting people is a daily activity when you’re surrounded by almost 400 new people for the week). We’re past the halfway mark now and it’s been great. 😀
I gave my flash talk this morning (and made this page with book recommendations from it), and also wrapped up my classes for Grand Meetup at lunchtime. I spent the afternoon lounging while I caught up on The Flash and Arrow. And then I met up with everyone to be in the annual Automattic group photo. (Whoa.) After dinner, I went to a bowling alley with about 100 other Automatticians. My bowling game wasn’t great (but was fun) , and I played pool too and actually won a game. It was really great to have the total downtime with everyone and get to know some coworkers I otherwise haven’t had a chance to spend any time with. Today felt like a day that explains the reason for why we meetup every year at GM… It was exhausting, but so beneficial.
I spent the bulk of my day at GM (#a8cgm) in class today learning more about some tools that are helpful while troubleshooting a user’s problem, but aren’t always the easiest to jump into during a live chat unless you’re really comfortable with them. It was really helpful, so I’m looking forward to trying things out in a real-time support setting soon. After class, I watched some Flash Talks (everyone is required to give a talk, up to four minutes) and caught one with Ghost Pepper info followed by a chance to taste one. And they got quite a few volunteers: And when I was all talked out, I went to my room and watched the season premiere of The Walking Dead (followed by The Daily Show to cleanse my brain of zombie images before sleeping).
