I have a new bathroom, y’all!

Soooooooo, you may recall we’ve been working on a full bathroom remodel (like, the down to the studs, I could see the dirt under the house, city permit kind) and it’s ALMOST DONE. We’re being kinda lazy/slow about it right now, since we’re able to use it and it’s lovely and glorious in there, but will wrap it up fully soon. So, here’s the list from a while back with lots of new lines crossing things off. Master Bathroom To Do List: Obtain permit from city. Demolish everything! Install all new plumbing/fixtures.  Update electrical & add outlets/lights. Install sheetrock & paint. Build new shower. Tile shower, walls and floor. Replace door, including new hinges and knob. (Need to install knob!) Install new window.  Install vanity with sink & cabinet.  Hang mirror. Install toilet paper holder.  Hang hooks. Pass all city inspections. (One more to go!) Add finishing touches! As you can see, we’ve mostly cleared the original list. So, what’s left? Touch up the wall paint. Install baseboards and paint. Paint door and window trim. Install …

The Living Room Bookcases are Almost Done

Hi! 😀 I hit 366 days straight of blogging on April 11 and then I decided to break my streak to avoid accidentally starting to aim for two years straight. I had to really break it by not posting for the last several days so I would get over it, and you have no idea how many times I almost blogged. But it’s broken for good, so I’m back now. Hello. So, I think I’ve shared this photo here before, but this is what my living room looked like when I bought my house and the wood floor was waiting to be installed before we moved in. It was mostly original to 1960, except that inset carpet had been replaced I guess, but that didn’t make it any less horrifying. When we first moved in, I filled the shelves with as many brightly colored and pretty things I could find around the house to bright up the very brown room and hide those mirrored backs while I waited for the chance to update the room. Then we covered the …

New YouTube Fav: Home Tours!

I don’t know why I never thought to check YouTube for them, but OMG I just found out people post home tour videos there. It’s like MTV Cribs but way better! They’re real houses and you can totally snoop without having to go visit anyone! And because it’s YouTube, there are SO MANY. Here, fall down the hole with me:

Dining Room: Coffee Bar Time

The dining room project, in which we turn a formal living and dining space into one big dining room, is almost done, so: time to work on the coffee bar! It’ll be in the old dining space within the room. It’s the space in the far back of the first photo in this post. The hanging light you see there has been replaced with the drum shade in the photo below. The dining table is in the spot where the couches were. (That photo is from when we had to put all of our living room furniture in there to renovate in there. I promise we didn’t think that was a good look.) Here’s the space now: That’s the Hurdal dresser from Ikea and CB2’s Drum Flush Mount Lamp, plus our usual wood floors and Simply White paint by Benjamin Moore. And today we started painting the dresser: That’s just the first primer layer, so I’ll keep the final color a surprise for now. Other than painting the dresser, we’re going to pop that chair rail off …

Front of the House: Updated To Do

In an effort to keep myself honest about progress around the house, I’m sharing an updated to do list for the entire front of the house (minus the kitchen). I originally shared the list last November here, when I first made it. I’ve since added to it and recently have crossed several things off. Seeing this progress happen (the living and dining rooms are soooooo close to being totally done!) while also working our way through a full master bath remodel feels great. Even when the bathroom is stressing me out, at least I can look around other parts of the house and feel good about the work. We’re making great progress and I love my house more and more. So! Here’s the list… Living Room: Add sectional. Finish up & paint built-in bookcases white. (Finished, now paint!) Install & paint trim around small doorway. (Installed!) Install & paint baseboards. (Installed!) Add new rug + rug pad. Move coffee table & TV stand into living room. Set up TV stuff & surrounded sound. Put books & things on …

Life Update, late March

I ate another sandwich today: Chicken salad made with rotisserie chicken, mayo, mustard, relish, celery, grapes, salt and pepper, with lettuce and tomato on a ciabatta roll. And my bathroom passed the first plumbing inspection! Phew. The window install meant for today had to be postponed due to thunderstorms, but they’ll be going in Monday, so no big deal. Tomorrow the electrician is coming to update the wiring in the master bedroom and bathroom (and add a light over my table in our new dining room). There will be lights in better spots and more outlets! (Also, zero scary wires from 1960, so that’s a great thing too.) Once the wiring is done, it’ll be time for two more inspections: electrical and framing, for the room/walls/foundation in general, before the sheetrock can go up. My painter stopped by today to check things out and work up a quote for installing/repairing/updating/painting the walls in the bedroom, bathroom, and hallway, and I’m working on scheduling the tiling for the shower walls and bathroom floor. The new bed is being …

Master Bathroom: Progress!

Last Friday: Cast iron shower base arrived! Also, floor tile. Wall tile on the way. Plumbers on Monday! BATHROOM IS HAPPENING. pic.twitter.com/2fPcSC9xgU — Sarah Blackstock (@sarahblackstock) March 25, 2016 Today: This week’s schedule: plumbing, plumbing, windows, electrical. (I hope Friday is a day of rest, because I don’t want to hate my bathroom.) — Sarah Blackstock (@sarahblackstock) March 28, 2016 Some plumbing progress: By the end of today, the plumbing rough-in was done and the cast iron shower pan was installed. They’ll be back to do the water test tomorrow and the City Inspector is expected sometime too. (First inspection! Eek!) Next: windows (Wednesday) & electric (Thursday)! Scheduling walls & tiling soon. OMG, Y’ALL. THIS IS GOING TO BE A BATHROOM.
