The Americans & Parenting Skills

We spent the evening finishing season two of The Americans. Having been a little kid in the 80s, I spent a few years being pretty obsessed with the USSR, the Cold War, and wanting to be a spy when I grew up, so the show is a nice diversion from regular ol’ modern life.

I don’t have kids (and never will), but I find it hilarious when otherwise non-violent, good parents say stuff like this. Because I imagine parenting would cause me to think all sorts of similar thoughts very frequently, so it feels really honest. (Plus, the extra layer of humor within the show comes from the fact that her parents are quite violent, except she has no idea, so she’s not afraid of them being so toward her at all. And she was being really insufferable.)

Anyway, punching your kids in the face aside, if you haven’t watched the show, give it a try. Seasons 1 & 2 are streaming free if you have Amazon Prime.
