Sarah’s House: Welcome!

My husband & I realized after a year of living in Dallas that we liked it more than we thought we would and decided to buy a house. We found a great one last year and moved in a few months ago. (Okay, like 6. Pardon our boxes.)

New House, old super brown living roomOur house was built in the ’60s and none of the previous owners have brought it into modern times, so that’s what we’re working on now. It’s in the city, but still in a nice neighborhood with old trees and quiet nights. We can get to the movie theater that shows the limited release films in 10 minutes and can always find a great new restaurant to try. Basically, we love it here, and we love our house (even if it needs some work).

And by work, I mean: Look at our living room in the photo to the left! It’s so brown! (Those boxes are full of the hardwood floor we had installed right before we moved in.) Check out the mirrors backing those shelves! And the inset carpet! Since this photo was taken, we’ve swapped out the floor, but it’s still brown for now.

Other than the beautiful floors and some drywall updates (like closing off doorways & such), so far we’ve done mostly visually-boring but really important updates like: upgrading the electrical and grounding outlets, replacing the leaky plumbing connections in the laundry room, and installing new garage doors and openers to replace the original wood ones that were probably going to attempt murder soon. Next up is chimney repairs. (Boring! But necessary!)

But hey, aren’t our floors lovely?:

New House, New Wood Floors

New house, new wood floors and white wallsEven with boxes everywhere and all the chaos that comes with moving, the new floors made our first days in our house instantly awesome. They’re just so pretty! And new! The front room (pictured directly above) is the formal living/dining room, but we don’t call it that because saying “formal” sounds weird and we don’t “live” in it regularly (yet?) so what is probably supposed to be “the den” (the wood-heaven you’ll remember from up top) is what we call in the living room. Anyway! Whatever the front room is called, the floor is fantastic and it’s going to be so nice in there! There’s a large window that looks out to the front yard and we’ve got big dining table goals.

The photo to the right is a closer look at the floor-trim-paint combo we’ve got going on all over the house. I love it. We’re all about white walls, great wood tones, and fun. (Also, remember: My husband is Dutch and so traditional American shades-of-brown-everything is not for him. And it’s not for me either! The design inspiration is one of my favorite lasting effects on my life from living in The Netherlands.)

All this to say, we’re finally making some visually-exciting headway in setting up our house, so I’ll be able to start sharing after photos (!!!) soon. If you follow my Instagram, you know we installed a gallery wall above my desk recently, so keep an eye out for a shot of the final product. It’s so colorful & fun, and I can’t wait to share! We’ve got big plans! New bathrooms & an expanded kitchen & painted exterior brick & so many things! Updates soon!
